If you’re unfamiliar with the term “hydrocephalus” you are not alone. The term hydrocephalus roughly translates to “water on the head” is condition where pressure builds up inside the head because of a build-up of Cerebral Spinal Fluid that often requires “shunting” to relieve the pressure. According to the Hydrocephalus Association website, over 1,000,000 people, in the United have this condition. Our son is one of them.
A condition Levi has had since birth, we’ve grown accustomed to his symptoms of nausea and headaches usually leading to brain surgery. In Levi’s case, the symptoms of each “shunt revision” have varied slightly, but a few factors are consistent. This past week when Levi woke up in the middle of the night and got sick, but seemed fine the next day, we thought maybe it was just something he ate. Then, when got sick again coupled with a headache that ebbed and flowed, we began to brace ourselves. An all too familiar pattern was emerging.
We made the usual phone calls and prepared our squad for a trip to the hospital. But then, something happened, he didn’t get worse. His headaches lessened and he began to feel less crummy.
Most of the time, we don’t find ourselves praising God for ourselves or someone else being sick. But that is just what we did! Because our boy was “just sick,” that meant not adding another notch to his amazing neurosurgeon’s belt. Because our boy was “just sick,” our family wouldn’t have to put life on hold. Because our boy was “just sick,” God was going to get to demonstrate His faithfulness in a magnificent and often overlooked way, by letting Levi’s body mend.
